A new host town, an opening night super special stage in the capital and a marathon 60km test are the highlights of a new-look Rally Italia Sardegna (5 - 8 June) according to the provisional schedule.
Olbia has hosted the rally since the Mediterranean island took on Italy’s WRC encounter in 2004, but organisers have decided to move the base to the historic west coast town of Alghero. The service park will be based around the marina and the finish will be held there.
Cagliari, the island’s south-coast capital, will be the venue for Thursday night’s start and the opening 1.30km super special. Afterwards cars will journey north by transporter to Alghero in readiness for Friday’s first full day of competition.
That will take place over traditional stages in the hills and undulating forests south of Olbia, with a 15-minute remote service in Oschiri.
Saturday’s competition will cover a massive 188.50km of action and include two passes over a marathon 59.70km Monte Lerno test, which will join together two previously run stages and take in the famous Micky’s Jump. The day will end with two tests in the north near Sassari.
The final day has a new stage near Alghero, which will be used twice. The second pass will form the Power Stage.
The schedule shows 19 stages covering almost 396km.
