The Briton claimed three fastest times from Saturday’s four stages to extend his overnight advantage over Finnish rival Kalle Rovanperä.
Rovanperä endured another frustrating leg at the wheel of his Skoda Fabia. Given a one-minute penalty overnight after approaching a time control from the wrong direction, the 18-year-old lost another two minutes on Saturday’s opener changing a damaged wheel.
Just Sunday’s four stages now stand between Greensmith and victory.
Bonato shrugs off scare in WRC 2
Yoann Bonato maintained a healthy lead in WRC 2 despite losing a minute on Saturday’s final stage when a front tyre came off the rim.
Rovanperä endured a frustrating day in his Fabia R5
Fastest on two stages in his Citroën C3, Bonato had enough of a cushion over his rivals to maintain position, but the incident trimmed his advantage to 1min 23.6sec.
Behind Bonato a fierce battle for second place raged between Guillaume de Mevius and Adrien Fourmaux.
Formaux held the position overnight, but de Mevius attacked hard and claimed two stage wins in his C3 R5 to overhaul his rival on the final stage. De Mevius will start Sunday’s leg 4.5sec ahead of Formaux.
VW Polo driver Ole Christian Veiby finished a distant fourth after he lost two minutes replacing a damaged wheel on SS12. Rhys Yates is fifth in a Skoda Fabia R5, almost three minutes ahead of sixth-placed Nicolas Ciamin.
