New tech boosts WRC TV coverage
The adoption of a new type of live TV technology will bring exciting new possibilities to the coverage of WRC events in 2019.
WRC Promoter, the company responsible for the sport's television production, has agreed a partnership with broadcast expert LiveU, to use its award winning hardware-based HEVC technology to send footage in compressed, but high quality, format.
The system will revolutionise the way WRC TV crews positioned in the stages transmit their footage to the TV production base in the service park.
The previous system meant recorded files were transferred by motorcycle courier or helicopter from filming locations to the production office.
The new technology enables film crews to stream live footage or files directly from the location to a LiveU server in the office, ready to be accessed immediately by programme makers for highlights or live TV.
"LiveU allows us to significantly expand our camera coverage without having to worry about access to certain parts of events or rely on motorcycles to deliver the additional captured footage to us," explained Florian Ruth, WRC Promoter's director of content and production.
"In order to continue to fully engage existing viewers and to attract new audiences, we constantly need to innovate. Using LiveU allows us to think differently and to bring a fresh level of dynamism to our content as we can use locations at each event that simply weren't possible previously.
“With our ‘All Live’ approach, we try to give the viewer the maximum possible variety on shots and the best of the action.”
The LiveU system was tested last year at ADAC Rallye Deutschland, and has already enhanced coverage of this year's WRC rounds in Monte-Carlo and Sweden.
Under the new partnership, LiveU technology will be used at upcoming rounds in Corsica, Portugal, Sardinia, Finland, Germany, Turkey, GB and Spain.
