Julius Tannert claimed a nail-biting FIA Junior WRC victory at Corsica linea - Tour de Corse on Sunday afternoon following a remarkable recovery drive.

After ending Friday’s opening leg less than a second from the lead, the German dropped to third after conceding a minute due to a spin early in the second day.

A determined fightback carried him to within a handful of seconds of longtime leader Tom Kristensson ahead of the final Wolf Power Stage. Tannert threw caution to the wind in his Ford Fiesta R2 to snatch the honours by 1.9sec.

“It’s like a dream come true for me,” he said. “We lost one minute on Saturday morning and I thought everything was over, but we didn’t give up and gave everything on the last stage.”

The consolation for Kristensson was that he maintained a healthy 13-point lead in the championship after finishing 23.9sec clear of fellow Swede Dennis Rådström.

Jan Solans finished more than five minutes back in fourth after an opening stage puncture and damaged suspension shattered his victory hopes. The Spaniard nevertheless showed stunning pace to win six stages and lies second in the points standings.

Tom Williams and Roland Poom filled the remaining places in the top six.
