COMPETITION IMPRESSES VW’S CAPITO

Having a privateer at the top of the Rallye Monte-Carlo leaderboard after day one is great news for the WRC, according to VW Motorsport boss, Jost Capito.
Bryan Bouffier’s privateer Ford Fiesta RS WRC upstaged all of the manufacturer teams on Thursday as fierce weather conditions hampered tyre choices and made the stage results completely unpredictable.
The Frenchman’s closest challenger was Citroen’s Kris Meeke who ended the day 38.8 seconds off the ultimate pace.
Defending champions, VW, endured a frustrating day as local hero Sebastien Ogier could only finish fourth and his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala was more than two minutes off the lead in seventh place.
“It’s fantastic to see a privateer driver leading after a day,” Capito said.
“It shows how close the competition is and how competitive all the cars are. I think it’s a fantastic sign of how good the World Rally Championship is today. I’m really looking towards an exciting WRC this season.”
